Plan B

Five am is really early. However, 7am seems easier for me. Not to mention, getting to sleep early enough is proving difficult. So the new plan is to get up at 7am and just not stay up past midnight. I read on Zen Habits about a way to gradually get up earlier.

Strategy No. 2: You use the Kaizen method and get up one minute earlier each day. Two months later you would be getting out of bed one hour earlier – without even noticing the change!

So next week, I'm going to set the alarm for 7am and if that seems to work out alright, I'm going to keep working at it, one minute at a time.


  1. Sounds sane to me. I have be doing somewhat the same. 7am is so much more reasonable!

  2. Definitely don't overdo it at first.

    One thing that's helped me to shift my sleep schedule is a trick people use to fight jet lag. Don't eat for 10-12 hours before you're supposed to wake up. I don't eat after 7pm (helps me lose weight too) and it's almost impossible for me to sleep past 6am. Usually I'm up around 5:30 or so.

  3. BTW, it's not that I wake up hungry. Not eating somehow resets my internal clock. I just wake up like normal.

  4. I've found that leaving a bedtime "carrot on the nightstand" impells me to get out of bed earlier. What do YOU want to do most desperately? Well, that's what you reserve for your morning time. Blogging, catching up on e-mail, FB, viewing TED Talks, whatever is most appealing for you...set it up for when you get out of bed, remind yourself of that when you waken, and...you might just get up earlier. After all, who wants to get up at 5:00 am to do laundry?


  5. Jonathan- that's an interesting idea. When I was staying up really late I had a hard time not snacking. I'm not a breakfast person though. So even going to bed early and waking up early, I wouldn't eat until around 10am. Something to keep in mind though.

    It's probably not rational, but I didn't think it was going to be that hard to just go to bed early and wake up early. :)

    Mo-Oh I want to get up and do all of those things. But the thing I most want to do when I wake up....is go back to sleep! LOL. I found myself naturally getting up around 7am this week. So I think I have found a good time for me.
