Monday Manners 3/22/10

"Nothing, except what flows from the heart, can render even external manners truly pleasing."
- Hugh Blair

Here are a few mannerly posts that have been patiently waiting in my Reader.

Reading is an Elegant Habit - I'm not sure you can make the argument that if you do no read, you can not have manners.  Of course, it depends on what you read.  It's an interesting idea.

Bringing Meaning Back to Manners - A brilliant post about what manners are really about: respect, empathy, and compassion.  I agree that a meaningless "thank-you" doesn't feel or sound very good.  That's why I no longer prompt my children to be polite.   When someone does something nice for my kids, it feels good for me too.  It's easy to be warm and kind in return as I fill in the "Yes, please." or "Thank you so much."  The kids are doing it more for themselves now too.

Vegetarian Table Manners:  Ethics vs. Etiquette - We don't generally dine with people that don't know we are vegetarians.
